Understanding ZBrush – 3D Basics

BadKing Needs Your Support.

BadKing has been steadily growing over the last year but still has a long way to go, which is why we have introduced our Reward System by sharing the ‘Embed Code’ and ‘Share Link’ on the right.

In order for the site to grow we need to start offsetting some of the bandwidth and labour costs required to run the site. Ways to support the site include Purchasing Items from the product section, making a donation via PayPal, purchasing Download Points or simply spreading the word.

Download Points are used to download additional content from the BadKing website, anything from 720-1080p videos, additional 3d models/ brushes and related project files. You can purchase Points via the shopping cart or earn them by spreading the word though the Reward System seen on the right.

Chapter 01 ~ 3D Primitives to PolyMesh

In Chapter 1, we examine the main differences between 3D primitives and PolyMesh models. We look at the Initialize dropdown including the options that it has available with a variety of different 3D primitives before turning it into a PolyMesh.

In Chapter 2, we look at the basics of sculpting. We explore some sculpting brushes including different brush settings such as Zadd vs Zsub, Draw Size and Focal Shift. We also utilise Divide inside the Geometry dropdown.

In Chapter3, we look at the SubTool dropdown and how it works. We look at the different layers inside the SubTool pallet and explore ways we can change and shape our models together with TransPose or action lines.

Understanding ZBrush – 3D Basics

This is the second tutorial in the Understanding ZBrush series. This 3 chapter tutorial is designed for beginners and those using ZBrush for the first time. In this tutorial we explore the 3D aspect of ZBrush, including the differences between a parametric 3D and PolyMesh model, 3D navigation, sculpting brushes, subdividing mesh and the TransPose/ action lines.

In the introduction, we look at the overall scope of this 3 chapter tutorial and briefly examine some of the topics that will be covered including navigation, Zadd and Zsub functions as well as brushes and draw size.

    I accidently found this site and I love it, the design of the website, the awesome content and the idea behind the whole concept, keep up the great work!!

    Thank you for all this info!
    Just found this website days ago, and it’s marvelous!
    As a long time polygon modeller, I’ve been having a difficult time understanding the completely different concept of zbrush modelling (i already sculpt in mudbox and blender).
    Here you have everything really well explained, so now i can start to say i can work with azrush as well 😀

      used to be. Bondi-kingscross-paramatta-granville-summerhill in that particular order. studied at usyd sometime ago. doing mostly graphics design now but have always loved 3D. hope this would be my start to a 3d career one day.

      BTW, do you guys have any users’ showcase of some kind? thanks.

    Some thing like Super Best MOST awesome KING.
    I’m new to ZB, not brand new, but the tuts here are so good I feel Brand new.

    ZB has SO much I feel like I’ll never learn it all.
    You can bet dollars to donuts I’ll be spreading the good word on this site.
